This is my first time posting so hopefully this is the right forum. I was on holidays recently for a week and, as usual, switched my Raspberry Pi and Wifi off. However, when I returned I discovered that the battery in the thermostat had been drained and lost connection with the receiver. The receiver then defaulted to the 'on' state with the result that the boiler ran continuously for a week (and used 3 months worth of fuel!).

I suspect that the battery was low to begin with but is it normal behaviour for the boiler to turn on once a connection is lost? Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

Thermostats should normally go in the fail safe situation at power loss; i.e. Off state. Z-Wave thermostatic radiator valves are advertised as going into frost protect mode.
I don't know your device. Just glanced in some online page. I noticed dip switches being used for set up. Maybe something wrong there.
