It's 2019 and I'm using the latest version 2.3.8. A sensor gave strange values, I opened it's housing to check it and reset it locally by mistake. It was still present in the list of devices and I tried to reassign the device but I couldn't find a way to do that. It's frustrating to do all the configuration again. When I add the device as new, the next free number would be 2 but it takes 19.

You should use Replace Failed Node button in the Expert UI

If you already excluded the device from the network (on the controller side), you can not use this feature anymore

Reviving this in 2021... I just did a number of experiments trying to S2 authenticate one of those cheap Neo coolcam wall plugs. Turns out I don't seem to have a valid DSK and I wasted 5 node ids. That made me search this place and I'm not really getting it. Will previous node ids be recovered at one point? In my experiments I properly excluded the device after each failed attempt and it kept incrementing. Will lost node ids be used once I reach #232?

Yes, they will. Free non-allocated node IDs are re-used after 232 is used.
