Qubino ZMNHND1 behind UK 3pin Socket?

Post by Vini »

I have a single UK 3pin wall socket wired with Live, Neutral and Earth, from which I power a PC monitor. Could I wire a Qubino ZMNHND1 BEHIND the socket in order to control power to the socket?

If so, how would this be wired?

The easy answer is yes you can.

But it's a lot easier using a plug in socket.
Z-Wave TKB On/Off Switch Socket - GEN5 - UK
TKB_TZ68-E-GEN5 £28.00 Each

For your Device. Qubino.com gives the wiring diagrams.
But if you don't understand their diagrams you shouldn't be playing with the Live 240v wiring.
And Practically, If your socket is on the Ring Main. There would be 2 x 2.5mm wires to each connection.
That many wires would not fit into the space available on the Qubino connectors. Making it really hard to connect up.
Also You wouldn't be able to use the manual switches, all control would have to be wireless.

It’s a single socket off a spur so currently just has 2.5mm feeds.

I do have plenty of the TKB sockets, BUT, the socket I wish to control sits behind my photo frame (27” monitor) and there is no room for the socket, so I was hoping to bury the Qubino in the back box.

All diagrams seem to suggest lighting, so I just wanted to be sure. Think the monitor is only sat on a 3/5A fuse anyway.

Is the recess deep enough to take the Qubino ?
Are you happy to lose manual switches , giving all control to z-wave.

Connect Neutral To Qubino "N" and also to the socket "N". ( link wire, can feed this one back from the socket if needed)
Connect Live supply to Qubino "L" and "Q" In (Use 2.5mm wire to link them)
Connect Qubino "Q" out to Socket "Live" (using 2.5mm wire)

You need to fit 2 x 2.5mm wires into Qubino "L" connector (will that fit ?)

Be safe. turn off the fuse/breaker.
Then to be sure. touch the live and Neutral feed together. To prove it is safe.

Yeah, the socket is actually behind a 27" PC monitor (rPi powered Photo Frame) and not accessible, hence why I want to add the Qubino. The backbox is 50mm so will be fine, I used to house my Qubino in 35mm backboxes without a hitch.

The 2x2.5mm into L will be the trickiest bit. The RCD will be off during the work.

Thanks for the advice!

Nice one Vini,
Looks good. Is that on HDMI to the raspberry ?
I'm still working on 7 inch Nextion. Recessed into the wall, All 5 volts though so Arduino controller is up in my loft.
Arduino is networked, so communicates back to z-way over http.

Also as an amateur electrician myself.
you say. "The RCD will be off during the work."
Be safe.. I don't know your knowledge. I have seen some dangerous stuff done by my mates.
I still advise the final safety check. (touch Live and Neutral together before you touch anything)
Although this could trip the main breaker for the whole house. play safe.

Thanks Micky1500.

There's an ethernet cable and power (with a single USB 2.1a switch) running behind the monitor. The USB on the socket powers the Pi, the Monitor is just using a normal kettle lead. The Pi connects to the monitor via HDMI. With the frame in situ, I cannot access the switch, hence getting quizzical about the Qubino.

I'm a techy not a leccy. But... I'm good mates with a leccy, who begrudgingly vets most of my work (tradies don't like Joe Blow fiddling :p).

I always play safe. I wouldn't go poking if I didn't :)

Finally found the time to get this done. Though I've had no issues with 35mm backboxes, the socket has a USB port built in so is quite deep, as such I swapped out the existing 35mm backbox with a 45mm one and then got to work.

It was actually a ZMNHDD1 that I used (Dimmer, not Relay). I was able to get it working by;

- Splitting the Mains Neutral with a Wago, sending Neutral to the Socket (N) and Neutral to the "N" on the Qubino.
- Mains Live directly into "L" on the Qubino.
- Q/Switched Live on the Qubino to the "L" on the socket.

I can now control the power to the socket, which is perfect.
