700 devices on 500 controller - Any benefit vs 500?

Simple question:
Does one get any of the benefits of 700 vs 500 when using a 700 device on a 500 controller?
My understanding is between the time 500 and 700 was developed, the EU (where I am) relaxed the max tx power devices can put out a bit and silabs took advantage of this... Will I see slightly better range with 700 devices when connected to a 500 controller?
I am asking because aeotec has 700 series range extenders available. I have 2 of these older ones, 500 series... Will they work a bit better?
I also looked at the FCC images, the internals look very similar (including the antenna).
