3rd apps issue at Z-way Trident 5.0.2 and restore from Z-wave.me 4.1.4

Post by captador »

Hello,

I tried to migrate to z-way 5.0.2 using z-way backup (.zab) and most 3rd part apps are not working and not available for download.

Is it infra migration issue, or some step need to be executed on my razberry 3B device?

If you move from Z-Way version 4.1.4 to 5.0.2 - only the expert UI remains. The higher-level smarthome UI is gone, automation engine with rules and schedules is gone, support for HTTP devices, MQTT devices, JavaScript devices and virtual devices is gone, and support for apps is gone. If these are features you want/need, simply stay on version 4.1.4. A different option is to switch to Home Assistant for home automation and use the Z-Wave.Me integration (see: https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/zwave_me/).

In a very real sense, Trident IoT's business does not provide a home automation solution to users. Rather, Trident IoT provides home automation building blocks (silicon, SDK's, development boards, consulting services) to other businesses.

IMHO, for legacy Z-Wave.Me customers, it would be less confusing had Trident IoT not used the name "Z-Way" for version 5.0.2 since it only supports the Z-Way expert UI functionality (which they enhanced to have WebSockets and REST APIs). For legacy Z-Wave.Me customers, it would have been clearer if Trident referred to version 5.0.2 as "Z-Way Expert", but I'm guessing their priority is with new customers, not legacy Z-Wave.Me customers.

So there is no real update for normal users with z-way, we should change to other systems with new products
Zwave was always an expensive solution, now we/I can change to newer products.

If Z-Way version 4.1.4 meets your needs, there's no immediate reason to migrate to a different platform. Keep in mind what @PoltoS wrote when he announced the closure of Z-Wave.Me in Feb. - support for remote access, cloud backups, mobile app and other cloud-dependent features should continue until Feb. 2027. Of course, there is a chance Trident IoT will abandon Z-Way without any notice, but that risk is present with any cloud-dependent service. If you want to avoid the risk of Z-Way support disappearing, you can switch to Home Assistant and either re-use your existing Z-Wave.Me controller hardware or buy a new controller such as the Zooz ZAC93 or ZST39. If you re-use your existing Z-Wave.Me controller, you won't have to exclude/re-include all of your nodes with the native Home Assistant Z-Wave controller (zwave-js-ui). You will need to re-interview your devices since zwave-js-ui won't know what each device does, it will only know the network ID and node IDs stored on the Z-Wave chip.

What should be avoided is for "legacy" Z-Way users (i.e., running Z-Way version 4.1.4) upgrading to Trident IoT's Z-Way version 5.0.2 since Trident IoT's version only supports Z-Way's expert UI.

Please explain what is the issue with "HTTP devices, MQTT devices, JavaScript"? Everything should work as before in v5.0.2. Nothing was removed from the Trident IoT version.

Check that you are suing the right linux build. Then check that libcurl is the right one. HTTP depends on it. You can start z-way-server manually and check the first 10 lines of output

@PoltoS Are you able to put a link to the full 5.0.2 version on https://storage.z-wave.me? Currently, the web site shows the following:

Should Z-Way users running version 4.1.4 on a Raspberry Pi running bookworm download version 5.0.2 from github at this link: https://github.com/tridentiot/z-way-builds (Latest release), as highlighted below?

Is there a changelog for version 5.0.2?

Thanks for keeping Z-Way alive!
