razberry range problems

Post by rabing »

Inside a stone wall building (no steel, just stone) I have problems to
reach devices more than 10 - 12 meters away. Would it be possible
to mount an external antenna to the raspberry case? Does it make
sense?

An external antenna will make

An external antenna will make the range much better (around x3), but this can be done only by soldering (not only the antenna, but also the capasity coupling). We strongly discourage you to do it unless you are ready to throw away your RaZberry doing something wrong.

We do not do it out of the box, since most cases do not have holes to install the antenna

No tuntorial is available.

The antenna depends on your region. For EU I would suggest something like http://www.simplesolutions-uk.com/produ ... ted-rp-sma

Antenna Mount

Post by rabing »

It would be nice to have a Razberry board with an SMA connector.

Hello,
you think to install a z-wave module for extending the scope of transmission / reception?

yes, I have mains powered devices which do extend the range. however, when using the KEYFOB remote
the location where you use it changes and I think the z-wave routing feature is only good for
devices that do not change their position.

Having more then 10 meters with the Razberry would help...

Wall Plug

Post by Pitt13 »

Hello,
From what I understand the Z-Wave network: each Z-Wave module functions as a wireless repeater with other modules to ensure full coverage of your home. So the modules between them, allow to create the bridge between them and the razberry. Does using a Wall Plug this unit will allow you to extend your reach to network?

It can help to bridge, but

It can help to bridge, but not endlessly. For example (some?) battery driven devices can only have one routing node between itself and the controller. Multiple permanently powered devices do increase network stability. Also frequent polling devices seems to improve the "health" of a Z-Wave mesh.
I have one wall plug inserted at a strategic place. I think it helps, but I never properly measured the effect.
