Effect of adding Range extenders

I added two Aeon Range extenders (devices 29,30) to my mesh. The image below shows the effect on network quality before (right) and after (left) the addition. In some areas there are losses in other there is quite some gain. Device 30 is placed near to the very end of the house because it has to bridge to an outside building. Device 29 is central in the front part of the house. For thermal insulation purposes I have applied quite a bit of aluminised sheet between floors and in some walls.

Strange. Dark green is "direct range". Why 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-6 now looks better? Only yellow and red should become greener, but light green should not change to dark green.

As an educated scientist I should have repeated this a couple of times before publishing I was as amazed as you are about gain but also loss of direct links. I never get consistent outcomes with these graphs. These radio fields are complex and hard to predict.

@PoltoS: isn't the left side the new situation? So the first nodes change from "dark green" to "light green"? Which is odd for another reason? Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm new to these diagrams.

Anyway. If I'm not wrong, that's an intriguing situation. I've been experimenting with RaZberry an routing a lot lately, so your post caught my attention. Would it be possible to draw a rough sketch of where your controller & mains powered devices are, with some distances? Or describe that situation? I've got two very preliminary ideas. Maybe the "dark green" powered nodes on the rightmost diagram are really at the edge of the direct range. So after a reorg they switch to routed mode.Or, something causes interference on the Z-Wave band. Got any (very) old wireless headphone or baby phone? Your neighbors? If I read your diagram correctly, I seems possible that device 7 is used as a router by the others... is that device closer to the controller?
