running as device instead of hub/controller

Is it possible to set up a Raspberry Pi as a Z-Wave device instead of a Z-Wave hub/controller? If so, how?

Easier said than done. Searching produces an error message about the keywords being too common and browsing through pages there isn't a response to thus question. Do you have any insight on this or at least can provide links to something?
